    Fuel Issue (?) GT40

Just recently got my 'new' Super Sport. During the test-drive in the States it ran out of fuel. After filling up it ran fine without any issues.
When I put it in the lake here it started up great, idled for a while, but then when we started wakeboarding it started 'hesitating' within 10 minutes. I had only put a few liters of fuel in it so figured it ran out of fuel again (non-working fuel gauge is one of few things that I knew need attention) and went back to the dock.
When I filled it up only one can of 32 liters (8-ish gallon) went in before the tank was full. So that was obviously not the issue.
Rode a bit again and same issue, now with stalling of the engine. Every time it started, ran for a second or two, and died again.
Cleaned out the fuel filter/water separator several times until no dirt or water came out anymore. It started better and better, and kept running longer, but still gave the same issue after a little while (minute or so) of running. So it seems that cleaning the filter did help, though it could also be the engine cooling off (?, or something else of course).

When it ran it ran fine. Temp was perfect.
What do you guys think? What next to check? Are there more fuel filters, and where?

Someone on CCFan already suggested to run it with the filer cap open. I'll also check the fuel pick-up, which has caused me trouble in my 2001.

    Thanks!

You said you cleaned out the fuel water separator until no water came out anymore? As in there was water in it? If so then you could have water in the fuel tank which is heavier than gas and will just sit on bottom of tank despite how much fuel you put in it. Sure sounds like water or fuel starvation issue though with the hesitation your describing.

****, trying to pull the pick-up out of the tank but no way to unscrew the **** thing. Are these (see pic) supposed to separate in the normal direction or do these happen to go reverse?

t.franscioni; there was a little bit of water in it, but after running for a while none anymore. With water in the tank it should keep filling up I'd say?

Ya it should ypur right. Iv never pulled the pickup out of tank it likely has sealant in the threads and is bonded to the tank. You should be able to put a vacuum on the fitting and check it to see if fuel comes out. Vise versa if you blow into that fitting it should shut as its a check valve only allowing fluid out and not in.

If you can blow into it then the check valve has failed and you'll need to replace that fitting or fix it if possible.

Disclaimer: For safety I'd drain the tank before testing with a vacuum if you use any electrical vacuum pump. Or just pull the hose off after the low pressure fuel pump and then just turn key to accessory position and it should turn the pump on and you'll see fuel come out of the hose. Assuming your fuel system is the same as mine with the low pressure and high pressure pump?

Put a fuel pressure Gauge on the rail. Way less effort than taking the pickup off. You need 35psi at the rail. Confirming fuel pressure could eliminate or confirm that it is actually a fuel delivery problem.

You have the FCC since your boat is a '97. Check to make sure that tube inside the FCC isn't cracked. Sounded like that was a common issue and led to similar behavior to what you're describing.

If you ran it out of fuel there is always the possibility of killing a pump.

I've undone both of my tank fittings, one large adjustable wrench on the hex tank fitting to stop it breaking free of the bond to the tank and one on the square of the fitting, its a normal NPT tapered thread (not reverse) so you'll need a sealant - I used Quicksilver Perfect Seal as I had that lying around, but you don't want to use PTFE tape as bits can end up in the pump, etc.

The anti-siphon valve is a ball bearing + spring set up so you can clean it pretty easily with carb cleaner and the pickup tube does have a gauze on the end so it's worth checking that for blockages, especially if the tank has been run dry

If that doesn't work, I think the fuel relay can fail too - have a look at the "poor mans GT40 diagnosis" on ccfan for more ideas - http://www.correctcraftfan.com/forum...TID=25584&PN=2
