    Steering cable replacement on SAN

Doing some major work on the boat and need to replace the steering cable. I pulled it out yesterday and had to cut the cable before the nut to get it pulled through because the tube is way too small to get it through. I did some research and I'm seeing that most everybody is replacing the cable and running the cable outside the tube. I'm contemplating splitting the tube and then slipping the cable back into the tube.

You can't take the nut off and slide cable through then reattach the nut after you get it through? My boat came with a new steering cable so I have never removed the nut so maybe it needs to remain on???

if you cut the tube there a chance that it's pretty brittle and will just crack if you try and pry it apart. I know mine is Iv pulled all the wires and cables through it and cracked it in a few places fairly easily (exception of steering cable that is)

It will fit. It went through there when it was new, it'll do it again. If you have a heater you'll need to get those hoses out of the way. They went in after the steering cable from the factory. Pull them out. Attached a string to one of them so you'll have that to pull them back through after the steering cable.

The steering cable has to be fed in from the front. The most important thing you need to do is "shorten" the cable as much as you can. Take a close look at the rudder-end of the cable. The part that attaches to the tiller arm on the rudder will slide back, into the cable. When you're feeding it through, make sure that end is slid back in as far as it will go. This is the only way it'll make the turn.
