    High Idle - Sometimes?

    Hi PN'ers,

I have been having a pretty consistent high idle issue on my 02 196. It has the 5.0 engine. Basically after skiing a pass (34-36) when I go to set down at the end of the lake the engine will stay in a high idle. As soon as the driver puts it in gear the engine idle drops down to a normal idle and stays that way until another pass. This only happens after basically high RPMs so I don't notice it when I pull my wife at 26mph. The issue seems to happen if the driver pulls back the throttle quickly into neutral as opposed to slowly bringing the throttle back to neutral.

Boat runs like a top otherwise so this is more a annoyance than anything else.

Could it be an issue with a vacuum or something?

Check the throttle cable and see if it is touching the shroud or anything else along its way. If the shroud is the issue, try running without it to confirm. Guessing you have PP on the boat, if so does this only happen when PP is on?

I will have to turn the PP off and see if it does it. We basically only use the boat in the slalom course so the PP is almost always on. I took a peak at my shroud and its cut so the throttle cable can route cleanly and doesn't appear to be touching the throttle cable. But I can try running without it just as a test.

My '02 does that occasionally. It didn't hardly do it all summer, but then did it a lot the week before Labor Day and Labor Day weekend. I think there are other threads on the site that discuss the TPS (throttle position sensor). I may need to look at that in the spring. Let me know what you find out with yours.
        Ski on dude!
