    Tachomoter problem

I took my 97 sport out for the first run of the season and noticed that the Tach was reading about 5500 rpm at about 34 mph. I thought they are only supposed to run about 4200 rpm which makes me think the tach is off. has any had this problem and if so how would I fix it.

    Thanks for any help.

    RE: Tachomoter problem

My uncle had that problem on his 96. When he turns the engine off, the key to on, then off, then starts it, it'll fix. Weird problem, I don't know what the solution is, yet, anyway.

      RE: Tachomoter problem

That vintage of tachometer has a selector setting on the back for 4,6,8 cylinders. When it works but reads incorrectly it usually has jumped to a different cylinder setting. My 1995 always tried to run in 6 cylinder mode reacting as you describe above. At the beginning of each summer I typically had to pop the dash cap and fiddle with the selector screw on the back of the tach. A little shot with electrical contact cleaner might help too. I nice solid tap with the end of my finger on the face would sometimes knock it back into the correct mode. Once the perfect pass was installed it was not much of an issue any longer.
