    Excalibur 330 front main seal (facing the stern)

    Is it possible to replace the front main seal on a Vortec 5.7 without removing the engine from my '04 SANTE 210? Love to hear from someone who's done this. Thanks.

    Yes will need to purchase timing cover as it cannot be changed separately worst part is dealing with the sump gasket when putting it back on. BTW you will need to get gaskets for circ pump as that has to come off to remove timing cover

          Didn't take any pictures because I was pretty focused on getting this done today.

          Started by removing the center sundeck section for better access. Pulled the belt, belt tensioner, water pump, and damper off the front (stern side) of the engine. Dropped the pan, removing all the fasteners except the two studs at the rear (bow), which I just loosened. Removed the timing cover.

          A previous "mechanic" must have tried to stop the oil leak by gooping about a full tube of RTV all over the outside where the cover and pan meet below the damper. Didn't work, and I had to clean that mess off the edge of the pan out of pride. The pan gasket looked okay. It looked like it was the starboard corner of the cover where it meets the pan that was leaking, so I made sure that got a good seal with RTV.

          Then installed the new cover, tightened the pan back up, followed by reassembled everything else in reverse order. Then finished all the other winterizing stuff, except wash and wax, which the kid is supposed to do tomorrow after school. Now I get to wait until next spring to start it up and see if I actually accomplished anything.

              Maybe a 1/2 quart every 40-50 hours. Enough to make real mess down in the bilge.
