    Rub Rail Marks

My rub rail has the white scuff marks from the bumpers. Does any one know what will take these white scuff marks off the rub rail? I have yet to find anything that will take them off.

Thanks for any ideas or solutions.

    RE: Rub Rail Marks

I don't think this does anything perminant, but it just seems to me that every time I 303 the boat, the white scuff marks seem to get a little more faint--but that could be just me...

Acetone works nicely. You can also wet sand the rub rail.

        RE: Rub Rail Marks

Need to be careful with Acetone on the rub rails the older ones are more rubber and will take the Acetone just fine whereas the newer ones have less rubber in them, (much stiffer) so, sometimes the Acetone will leave wipe marks. Just check it prior to doing anything.

I just used acetone on my 99 Sport and it worked incredibly well. I was given the idea from my dealer. I understand that they use it on any scuffs (not scratches) on the gell coat also....then follow up with a good wax.

For everyone that suggested wet sanding what grit paper do you use? I would think 1200 or finer but just want to see what worked best for you.

                Thanks

Start at 1200 and then go up. Use warm soapy water.

I let by wife put the boat on the trailer yesterday and MAN - she scuffed the rails pretty good on the carpeted guide posts. I'm glad to hear there's hope in getting rid of them.

I know zero about wet sanding. I have an '05 - so what should I do? The comments on the Acetone sound like 50/50 make it better OR worse.

i want to make sure i understand that the rub rails you are talking about are the rubber "rails" on the outside edge of the boat that are most prone to rubbing the guide posts, rubbing on the sides of the dock, etc.

if this is so, use Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. They work great!!!!! I used them on my yellow and black rubber pieces and there were no bad reactions to them. All the marks came off with a little bit of rubbing. I was very happy. No need to mess around with wet sanding or anything, or worrying about acetone ruing things. Magic Erasers work great!!! Try it out.

Yes, as in the black rubber that runs on the outside just below the gunnel (all the way around the boat).

So - magic eraser is the way to go? How many do I need to do both port and starboard sides? How much time & elbow grease is it gonna take?

                        Thanks in advance!

2 magic erasers will do it just fine. they come in boxes of four for like $5 at any grocery store. if the rails are really dirty and have a lot of marks on them, you might have to use three of them, but i did both sides of my boat with two erasers in about 20 minutes. not a whole lot of hard work involved. its pretty easy, again depending on how bad the rails are. let me know how it turns out

Gotta tell ya - tried this last night and did NOT make quick positive progress.

I "think" it was starting to help, but I rubbed a long time. I guess I'm cool with putting in the time, but I am not optimistic that it is gonna work - but I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks.
