    winterization and the gateway box

I was reading a winterization thread and one mentioned to remove the gateway box and store in a warm dry location. Would someone be willing to explain the reason why, the location of the box and the proper method for removing this? I own a 2005 SANTE 210. Thanks

I believe he was referring to the gatway boxes with pitot tubes running through them. Otherwise some people take them out during winter for piece of mind to protect them from cold and moisture. They are pretty expensive to replace. Just my .02

02 won't have a Gateway, I think only 04 & 05 will have the pitot tubes. If your Gateway has pitot tubes they are supposed to be self draining, if they do not the bit of water can freeze and then back up onto the circuit board and fry them out. Completely removing the gateway and storing in a warm dry place is one way to ensure you will not have an issue. These gateway boxes were expensive but worse then that they are no longer produced so can be very difficult finding a replacement (with Pitots). On my direct drive the gateway is attached to the rear lifting ring threaded rod in the trunk, VDrive likely back in the same general area.

          Phil,
The reason is due to the fact that the pitot tube hoses run into pressure sensors inside the sealed gateway box. Some have reported the internal components inside the gateway box have failed causing the gateway box to fill up with water (the water pressure from the pitot tubes fill the gateway box when the boat is moving through the water. I have been pulling the pitot tube hoses off the gateway box and blowing (with my mouth) out the hoses/pitot tubes and then reattaching. I suspect the gateway box failures are caused by water in the pressure sensors freezing and cracking, creating a path for water to get in the following season. The gateway boxes are not easy to find and are very expensive to replace, so that is why it was suggested to pull out the gateway box (and store in a warm location - to prevent freezing) during the winter lay-up.
See this link for symptoms and solutions caused by water in the gateway box:

Thank you, one less thing to worry about for me.
