1990 Ski Nautique Gel Coat Thickness

I am currently restoring my 1990 Ski Nautique. It was heavily oxidized and requires wet sanding. Anyone have info on the thickness of the gel coat for a 1990? I have started the process and do not want to go too deep. There is considerable burn in from where the decals were.

    Thank you

It's highly unlikely you're going to sand through the gel coat doing a wet-sand operation. I have a 99 Air Nautique that's been wet-sanded three times. The goal is to go slow. Sand, rinse, and then take a close look at how you're going. I always used a pretty fine grit. 3000 usually.

Gel coat is about the same thickness as a credit card.

Working backwards, -using machine buffer-, finishing polish (3m finnese it), microfinishing compound (3m perfect it), 3m Super Duty compound,-then wetsanding-, 1000 grit, 600 grit, 400 grit, 200 grit. Wet sand as necessary, unless really bad start with 1000 or 600, if you get down below 400 be careful, black dots mean STOP sanding, its as good as it will get. Double check the compounds, bottle will tell you what grit compound they remove.

IMO Correct craft has some of the thickest gel coat. You should be able to wetland several times
