    New 644 prop Questions

So I got our new 644 prop to replace the stock 536(??) that I dinged on our 02 SANTE from Delta today. I ordered up some pins and the weekend saver kit with the C puller. It's a nice kit, probably not worth the $$ overall, but with the decent price, group buy, etc. it all works out.

Question 1: I noted that the front sides (forward on boat) of the blades are ground a bit to varying degrees. The rear sides (where prop # is) is not ground. I am assuming this is factory balanced and they grind those sides. Is this correct??

Question 2: Note that I have never changed a prop. The install instructions are clear enough, but one of the warnings is strange. They talk about the 75% taper contact and a lapping compound if there is not enough contact. I am assuming that this should not be the case and how can you tell if the taper is off anyway?? Should I be concerned about this if it's not obvious that the tapers are off?? Simply assume that everything is fine with this and move along??

I am pretty excited over the hole shot upgrade we are gonna get, I know it's not gonna be like the 836(??), but it should be better than the stock prop. As a side note that expensive weekend kit has a Nylock nut and a short pin, be sure to get the right stuff and Gary at Delta forgot to give me an extra castle nut so I have to call him about that and get the right spare. Any prop swap tips are greatly appreciated, I wanna get this right the first time and thanks in advance.

    RE: New 644 prop Questions

I've never seen a problem with taper contact. To check you could put white grease on the shaft and slide the prop on slide it off and look at the inside. If there is over 75% white grease on the inside your OK. Don't worry about removing the grease, it will make the prop easier to pull the next time. The nylok nut with pin should work fine. If you use the castle nut make sure you snug it to the pin hole and then use a new cotter pin.

      Thanks for the tips Rick.

So I can use the Nylock Nut in place of the castle nut if I wish??

I will probably just stick with the castle nut anyway.

I use the Nylock nut. The toughest part of the change is pulling the prop - I use a craftsman gear puller. There are also pullers available at True Value Hardware stores - at least in the lake town I live in. The grease is definitely a good idea to make it easier later and for checking taper contact.
