Hummingbird and Faria Depth Finders

I have a '99 SN with a Hummingbird DF. It too is experiencing inconsistent readings like others that have posted.

For those that have switched to the Faria DF, can you use the Hummingbird sending unit and plug into Faria gage, or do you have to pull the sending unit off the hull and relace?
