1989 Ski Nautique 2001 water intake filter

My 1989 Ski Nautique 2001 does not have a bowl type water intake filter as does the engine service manual I downloaded (from 1989). Can someone tell me what to look for and how to service

there is a metal screen (filter) inside the canister. Yes you need one. Unscrew the can, pull the filter out (screen) , being careful not to lose the O-ring and wash it with water when you see debris floating around in there. I often just take mine and reach over the boat and slosh it around to clean it. Fill Can with water and screw it back on.

The 'metal part' you're referring to is probably your'e tranny fluid cooler (would have a couple hoses going off the case towards the transmission). It'd be a good idea to install a strainer if yours doesn't have one as it keeps a lot of junk trapped there versus farther down the system.

Thanks Tom. I will have to see how to mount the filter and plumb it up. What type hose is on the water side and where might I get it

As long as you have room, you shouldn't need any more hose. You'll just cut it where you need to and get two appropriately sized insert fittings to get the hose in/out of the strainer. I would venture that your intake hose is 1-inch, so you'd need two 1-inch (barb x mipt) straight or 90-degree adapters (as your installation allows/needs).

Don't forget the clamps. I like to double clamp my water lines (cheap easy insurance). Make sure the gasket/o-ring is present when you screw the bowl on the strainer, and snug it up nice and tight otherwise you'll suck air and run into cooling issues.
