    Rough reverse

Tested a new 2017 G23 - 450 today. When going into forwards is very smooth but when shifting to reverse there seems to be a lot more noise and it just feels very chunky and rough. It goes into revers gear fine, just is much louder than shifting into forwards. Dealer rep said its normal but I am skeptical.

Anyone else notice this on their 450???

Yes, I have a 2016 230, It does the exact same thing, Dealer says it is normal. We put 130 hrs on ours last year with zero issues, it is just a little "clunkier" going into reverse. Regardless you are going to love the boat they are AWESOME!

Yep, perfectly normal and not limited to the 450. They pretty much all do this.

When you go from high RPM/speed to a reduced speed, does it sound like your prop is free spinning loudly? I'm wondering if that is normal on my 2017 230.

Question... Why is reverse clunkier in these newer boats? Nautiques are usually known for having a smooth shifting operation, going into forward and reverse. Remember the velvet drives? They put a lot of effort into making them shift soo velvety smooth going into either gear. What's changed ?

Would the 2:1 trans be the cause?

Had a 2003,2008,2015,and 2015 all the same. Pretty sure gears are cut to operate efficiently in forward.

I never had this issue with my 08-230. It was smooth and quiet shifting into forward and reverse.

                    Gang,

There is no "issue" here. It just sounds different when you go into reverse. That's all. Nothing to see here. Move along.

In manual transmission cars and trucks the forward gears are helical and the reverse gears are spur or straight teeth, helical gears mesh better and are much quieter. If you put a car in reverse and accelerate you'll hear a loud whine that you never hear in forward gears. I haven't torn down a boat transmission so I don't know if its the same, but it's highly likely. (and for the record, my new boat is much louder in reverse than my previous vdrive and my old direct drive)
