Previously had a 96 196 with single battery in the floor in a molded in area with carpet lid that was the floor. I'm now the new owner of a 2008 SANTE 220 with dual batteries under side seats. On my new 220 the port side battery is in a Group 24 plastic battery box with a lid. The starboard side battery is just in the molded in section under the seat. Does the battery need to be in a box with lid or left open? My only concern is piling stuff on top of the box across the terminals if not covered. Can't find anything in the manual and haven't seen anything here. Thanks for the help.

Here's what the CG says about it:
183.420 Batteries.
(a) Each installed battery must not move more than one inch in any direction when a pulling force of 90 pounds or twice the battery weight, whichever is less, is applied through the center of gravity of the battery as follows: ... (not pertinent to this discussion)
(b) Each battery must be installed so that metallic objects cannot come in contact with the ungrounded battery terminals.

I have an 08 210, which is probably the same scenario that you have. I upgraded to a larger group (29 or 31? can't remember off the top of my head) size battery. The battery box prevents you from putting the battery in the molded in hole, so I removed the battery box, but I continue to use a battery box lid to prevent terminal contacts. I had to buy larger batter boxes, just to get the lids, but the straps hold it down just the same.
