Check engine light / high voltage / 2008 Sante 210

Hello everyone , this is my first post as I just signed up , I'm hoping to get alittle help here from someone who might know anything about what I have going on . The boat is a 2008 superair 210 team edition with the 343 pcm motor . Factory wiring , factory stereo , factory clarion amps and sub , basically everything stock and untouched . Boat has alittle over 150 hours on it , never had an issue until yesterday .
When I purchased the boat new , I opted to not install tower speakers from the factory but it was pre wired through the tower for them from the factory. This past week I finally bought some tower speakers and hooked them up to the factory tower wires coming from the factory clarion amp and went out on the lake . The boat ran fine for 3-4 hours never missing a beat and speakers playing just fine . We had stopped for a moment to change riders while wakeboarding and when I went to take off to pull up my rider I noticed the check engine light came on . I shut the boat down right away , opened the hatch and checked the engine , everything seemed fine so I fired back up , the engine light went away and I began to try and pull my rider again , this time as soon as the boat was almost on plane , the light comes on again and I notice the voltage meter is pegged at 16+ .. I shut the boat down again , checked the battery connections , everything is connected right and tight , everything is freshly charged and they are holding close to 13 volts with the engine off .. At this point , I'm a long way from the boat ramp , and I'm just trying to figure it out on the water without much tools or help from anyone so I began singleing things out , I first turned the stereo completely off , and tried again to run the boat , but once again as soon as the boat takes off and the rpms raise up the voltage pegs and the light comes on . I did this a couple of times with different things , trying to narrow it down , but no matter what I turned off bilge pump , stereo , switching different battery banks , etc , nothing would stop it from pegging the voltage meter . While the boat idles , it idles at 13.5 volts like normal , but as soon as I fed it the throttle it would peg the voltage meter , so at this point it was getting late , we had a LONG ride back home at idle , maybe 2 hrs if we would have crept all the way there , so I opted to try and disconnect the alternator and see what happens . I unhooked the alternator , accelerated and the boat ran fine , no check engine light all the way back to the ramp and I got it on the trailer .

Im not sure if this is an alternator issue or not , I'm really confused by the voltage pegging out . I've had many alternators die , but they always did the opposite , they drained the system , not overcharged it ? Is this even possible , I'm no mechanic , but I know there is a voltage regulator , is it possible that it's bad and this in return doesn't let the alternator know when to stop charging and its pegging the gauge ?
I guess I need to start by checking the voltage coming off the alternator with a meter , I plan to do that tommorrow , is there anything you guys may know that can help me along if I have good voltage coming off the alternator ? What would cause this problem ? I mentioned the stereo , but I think it's just a coincidence that I hooked the speakers up the same day this thing messed up , the amps have always been installed since day one and have always been on since day one , the only difference in the whole situation would be that now I have 2 amps pushing speakers instead of just the 1 , but that amp has always been there and been hooked up and running . Any help is apprecited , I'm so confused by this problem , I've never had one overcharging ? I've searched through a lot of forums and can't find anything about a voltage Gaige pegging out .

Like Joyner1020 this is my first post to the sight. I am assuming that since there were no further posts that Joyner1020 successfully fixed the problem but I had the exact same issue with my 2012 Sport Nautique 200 with the PCP 343 engine so wanted to provide some closure to this in case anyone in the future has similar issues.

I bought the boat in March 2017 as the second owner. At the time of purchase from Buxton Marine it had 127 hours on it. They did a full walkthrough and mechanically everything was perfect. In August I was on day 2 of a 10 day vacation on a lake in Northern California when it the following error code was displayed on the Linc screen: DSC 563 Vbat voltage high, SPN 168, FMI 15. At the time the boat had 167 hours on it. I shut the boat down (including powered down the computer), started it up and the error message reappeared as soon as I powered it above about 900 rpm. I checked the voltage on the Linc and it was showing over 16V. Took it back to the dock at idle and checked the voltage at the alternator and at idle it wasn't producing less than 11 volts.

Sorry to some who may not like this but have to give Buxton Marine a plug here. Called them, explained the issue and that we were on day 2 of a 10 day vacation. After doing 10 minutes of their own research they called me back and said they thought it was the alternator too and asked me what address they could next day air an alternator to at no cost to me.

The following day I pulled the failing alternator (remove the serpentine belt, two mounting bolts, a positive and negative wire, and a data cable) and installed the new one. Ran perfectly the rest of the trip. Best service I have ever received from a dealership that was probably under no legal obligation to do what they did. Hope this helps someone in the future that may encounter a similar issue.

That is incredible and I've heard nothing but great things about buxton, that's outstanding customer service from any business.

Sorry guys , i fixed the issue the week I posted , no one here was offering any help , so I chose not to post my outcome . Long story short , the alternator was fried . Took it to my local armature guy , it tested bad and then he sold me an alternator which he had in stock that bolted right up and has more amps . boat was like new , low hours , very well cared for and stored inside ... still puzzled as to why it fried , batteries were new , always fill/empty ballast with motor running at around 1500 rpms so there is no drag on the batteries , stereo is wired correctly . I guess it was just a bad alternator issue and that's that ..
really dissapointed no one on here offered even a response as to what it could have been , was looking for a little help , didn't get it here . I do not live near a dealer and I doubt I would have got out of there cheaper than I did with my guy , all in all , the new alternator cost me $98 bucks and it hasn't missed a beat since , my voltage guage used to bounce around when the wet sounds were thumping , now we're staying at the 13-14 volt range and it doesn't move any .

So if anyone searching these threads gets a voltage alarm and the boat is pegging the voltage meter , chances are your alternator is fried. Hope this helps someone better than the help I got here at planet nautique .. I guess this site is full of a bunch of keyboard warriors that don't work on their own boats .. thanks for all the help .....

Well I can't speak for others but usually when there are no or slow responses means that they don't have a possible solution to the issue. Straight up with your response I am not sure I would help you in any event going forward. I do give you credit for closing the thread with a solution as this is where the value of this forum and community have been really helpful to me and many others. Please reset your butthurt feelings. By the way I perform all maintenance on my 08 210.....
