Fuel Octane PCM H6DI (450 hp)

Although PCM states non ethanol 87 octane fuel is fine to run in the H6DI (450 hp) engine, it goes on to state in the manual that the rpms and performance will be enhanced if you use premium fuel 91-93 octane. With premium fuel .40 - .50 per gallon more than 87 in my neck of the woods, I have though about use octane boost additives as a cheaper alternation than premium fuel. Any thoughts on this approach positive or negative would be appreciated.

In my experience filling up boats, mixing outboard fuel, filling street bikes and dirt bikes and snowmobiles the cost difference is not that much comparing 87 to premium. Also I've never seen ethanol free 87 octane in MN.

We have had ethanol free 89 octane on your lake which is rather large ( 550 miles of shoreline) at mostly all marina as the lowest octane available. Now most of the marinas on the lake are migrating to ethanol free 87 octane so they can get better retail price points than 89.

For a brief minute, I thought about doing the same thing. In my town though, pretty much every station offers 91 ethanol-free, so it's much easier just to pay and pour. Adds about $10 to my fill ups. I can live with that.

Here at Lake Norman, we have a Harris Teeter grocery store that just started selling gas, and they are selling ethanol-free 90 for $.06 less than the QT down the street is selling ethanol-free 87. I think it is like $2.61 or so right now. I have been running that in my H6 (and all of my other boats and small engines) this year with no problems at all.
