    G23 overheating

A buddy of mine picked up a 15 g23 with the XS-550 motor. Yesterday the boat overheated.(I was not onboard). They said it was spewing coolant out of the tank...that scares me. The boat overheated at idle. I haven't had a chance to go pull the impeller yet. But I will report back. Any more ideas? I've heard of them overheating from screens clogged/impeller pieces clogging the intake but never coolant spewing. Any input is appreciated!

Isn't the coolant spewing a symptom of the overheating, not the cause? At some point, even antifreeze expands and boils, and usually it goes out of the tank.

Bummer if that is his first time out.

      Listen to these steps:

      1. Impellor check. 15-20mins for experienced folks.

      2. Check the front end (stern entrance screen 1st stop after water pump, not the forward entrance) of the tranny cooler for blockages/debris. Don't confuse the tranny cooler for the oil cooler. They are identical black cylinder and nearly side by side within 12" of each other. Trace back 12-18" from the starboard inlet of the tranny off the black heavy 2" hose!to the black painted cylinder. That's thentarnny cooler output. Remove that forward portion of hose to allow a back flush. Remove starboard engine divider and lay belly down feet up head forward left arm and reach under the forward portion of the engine which is the entrance of the tranny cooler. Oil cooler is 12" aft of the tranny cooler...dont confuse them. Remove entrance hose to tranny cooler and feel in there to the screen. This is 100% where 1/4" and larger debris will get stuck all the time. While he is down there and he already removed the exit hose to the tranny cooler take a garden hose and back flush bow to stern to get any last bits out. 15-20mims for experienced folks. Loosen hose clamps and go John Cena on he hoses twisting them back and forth to break free and come off. 2-4lbs of sweat lost.

      3. Remove/ Check the thermostat for debris. Super simple 3mins on top of the engine. If <1/4" debris got thru the tranny cooler, it will collect here.

      4. Get under the boat and ensure your intake isn't blocked.

      5. Physicall remove and inspect your raw water strainer.

      6. Verify all hose clamps are tight in and around the engine and those big hoses on the exhaust. If they are loose you'll pull an air leak and loose cooling suction.

^^^^^ this is a 95% on a G over heat. My money is on impellor and tranny cooler screen.

I chased a demon the entire month of May. Impellor chunks had clogged my tranny input screen after Poplar Pointe hacks "backflushed" and also put my thermostat in backwards. Garbage.

I think we found the culprit. Interesting note. There were two separate impellers in the housing. This one and one about an inch wide stacked. Is this common in a G? I've only ever seen one.

I cannot speak for the supercharged motor, but putting 2 smaller impeller in there seems like it was a hack fix if you didn't have the right size. My 450 has a single impeller about twice that size.

100% hack job. What garbage shop did that?

all those impellor bits are now clogged at the entrance to the tranny cooler. Follow my instructions... even if it runs better with a new impellor.

the entrance to the tranny cooler is absolutely clogged now.

Yeah, someone should lose their job for that shizzle.
