Perfect Pass Speed Calibration

So, I've had this SV211 for over a year now. I have begun to think the wakeboard speed feels a little faster than what the PP is set at. Then I'm noticing the top speed seems slow per the PP readout (showing about 37-38) and the boat speedo showing about 41mph which seems correct. I used my phone this weekend to check speeds with GPS app and depending on how fast we were going the PP did seem about 1.5-2mph slow. I guess I need to calibrate it now.

Is it typical for these to need calibration very often?

And, if my pitots are clear, I assume the boat speedo is pretty accurate right?

I would calibrate to a GPS. Your boat speedos are most certainly off.

Ok, so I've calibrated both the perfect Pass and speedos to match my GPS app at 20mph. After I go faster than 25 the GPS and boat speedos stay in sync but the PP seems to start registering slower on speed. Is this typical?

Upgrade your Perfect Pass to the new version 9 Stargazer model which is GPS based.

I was having similar issues trying to get my older PP dialed in. The 6.5 version works solely off of RPM's.

I did this upgrade recently for my 196 - best upgrade ever!

Ok JMO, I also have a 06 SN 196, "best upgrade ever", can you expand ? Been thinking about this upgrade.... Also I am sure homer12 would like more info.

I installed the Stargazer on my '02 this summer also. It is awesome! The speed control is so much better and easier than with the digital pro. The course mapping is a nice benefit also.

Couple years ago I bought my boat, a 2005 with paddlewheel perfect pass and noticed that after calibration the PP speeds would go out of sync with GPS at higher speeds. I ended up replacing the paddlewheel and that corrected the issue. My guess was the paddlewheel must have had higher than usual friction so at higher speeds it would be spinning slower than it should, hence giving the inaccurate speed. Since then it's been fine.

Worth a shot. In my case I had the original spare wheel that came with the PP, super easy to install and it didn't cost me anything! Good luck!

The older non GPS Perfect pass will use a combination of paddlewheel speed and rpm to control the pull below around 25mph. Above 25mph is entirely rpm based. You need to set the baselines for all skiing speeds above 25mph, most typically in a slalom course with either the smart timer and magnets or a hand timer plugged into the pp module.

Killerrkyle, I've used the RPM mode before when pulling skiers above 25mph. You have to know what the RPM is at your chosen speed though to set it initially. I thought the speed will still be accurate; it's just that the PP has a hard time adjusting when only reading speed.

Only way to know the rpm is by setting baselines through the course.

Sure - so the classic PP speed control is solely rpm based, and the user interface is a huge pain to navigate to set the baselines for each speed, adjust based on crew weight, skier weight, aggressiveness, etc. it took me forever to figure it all out, and that is saying something given I build software for a living.

My gauge was flaky so I needed to replace it anyways, so I ordered the Stargazer upgrade with the Z box.

Massive improvement, the install was basically plug & play - I spent the most time taking the dash off to swap the display.

Powered it up, it automatically comes up in auto calibrate mode to tune it in for all speeds, by running down the lake in calm conditions as it cycles from 36 down.

Then put it in gps slalom mode and your good to go. Much easier to use.

You can also easily map up to 3 courses so you know your timings without needing magnets installed on the course.

The Z box has an accelerometer in it to maintain constant speed when you pull - basically giving you the equivalent pull from a newer Zero Off equipped boat.

My wife loves it for when she pulls me through the course.

As I said - best upgrade I've ever done for the boat!
