    Ballast Helm Knob/Cable

Anyone had issues with the ballast helm knobs being difficult to turn to the point of breaking? If so, any tips for loosening/greasing the cables without having to take them completely out?

It's the valves you need to replace them or just leave them open and deal with the tanks filling. To replace you'll bust a few knuckles and become a contortionist. Most have replaced with electric valves, or put in simer pumps (which don't leak past the impeller)

Yes, I don't think there's much you can do with the cables. I've disassembled a valve before, wiped up the old grease and applied Vaseline to the o-ring inside. It was for the belly tank so short cable. Seems to help some.

Thanks guys! Still learning all the pieces and parts of the boat. Didn't even think about the valves. Looking at Nautique Parts website, I see they have a newer red version that is supposed to be smoother. All of my existing helm knobs are very tight, but the port side is the worst to the point of not even turning. Sounds like I'll need to get a swear jar ready for the install.

It's amazing what you find on this forum after 10 minutes of searching/reading. It's now pretty clear from reading all the horror stories that simply replacing the old plastic valve with a new one will be a temporary fix. I suppose I should do some more research and decide if I should bite the bullet and go the electric valve route as wakejunky mentioned.
