Nautique 210 random "clunk" when starting

    2006 Nautique 210
Does anyone have any thoughts as to why the boat would have a hard clunk when pushing the push button start? It will clunk on first push. Clunk on second push and start easily on the third. This cycle continued the 4 different times the boat was started that day. Annual service was done in April with impeller replacement and starter replacement as well. Boat ran great until this. Boat has never ran hot, cylinders have always pressure tested at spec. Thanks for any input.

When it "clunks" does it continue to turn over, or does the starter "stall" and you have to release the start button and press it again?

That sounds right. I was going to have someone run back up there to check on it. The boat is sitting on lift.

OK, if the starter stalls when it "clunks" then it's a bad spot on the flywheel. A tooth is worn or chipped. I had this same problem on a boat (not a Nautique) many years ago. This doesn't necessarily mean you have to replace the flywheel. A good mechanic can insert thin metal shims in between the starter and the bell housing to slightly change the angle of the starter pinion gear to the flywheel. This will often let the starter get past the bad spot.

Thanks for the feedback. I will try to get it in somewhere to have it checked out. Of course something happens in middle of summer when there are no shops with availability in this area. Try to be responsible during winter and get everything running perfectly. I wonder if they did not install the new starter quite right... who knows. I hope it is something minor.

Loose starter can act same and will eventually damage the flywheel. Could also be a bad starter bendix assembly.

It turned out to be a failing solenoid on the starter I am told. Should be up and running now.
