Best products to restore gelcoat .

I have been struggling with faded gelcoat on my 97 Sport Nautique Masters Burgundy. The Burgundy stripe seems to fade very easily. I have buffed it with everything under the sun but the fading always come back in a few weeks unless I leave it in the garage (not gonna happen). It seems like the gelcoat responds best to some kind of oil based polish to get the color to really pop. I have even sprayed it with 303 to make it look good but in only lasts a couple days and the fading is back. I have just ordered a product called Owatrol that is a clear liquid you brush on the gelcoat and let sit for 15 minutes then buff off. has anyone used this stuff?

Any recommendations as to what works best??

    Thanks

3M Color Gloss Restorer with a cutting pad on a rotary buffer. Followed by 3M Liquid Marine wax with a buffing pad on a rotary buffer.

If you don't have a buffer, buy one. It's a great (relatively inexpensive) investment to restore your gelcoat and keep it shiny. Wax 2-3 times per season and the color should stay.

I used these products to restore my boat after removing the graphics that had been on the side for 8 years.

Can you add some detail on what you have tried? Buffed? Did you compound or polish? Have you wet sanded the boat? What type of pads and poishers did you use?

If you have just used a polish by hand then that may not be enough. If you have gone several rounds of wet sand, compound and polish then I am not sure what the issue is.

If the oxidation is bad, you may need to take off the top layer of faded gel.

      You need a good buffer.

Try the 3M heavy duty gel coat compound, look on the 3M web site for the Perfect-it for gel coat and Finesses it for gel coat part numbers. I recommend the two sided pads with quick attachment. Will need different pad for compounding and polishing.

          3M Super Duty Rubbing Compound
          3M Perfect-It II Rubbing Compound
          3M Finesse-It II Finishing Material

I believe these are what fgroce is referring too.

Personally I've had good results with just 3M Super Duty Rubbing Compound
          And
          3M Finesse-It II Finishing Material
