    Woops sorry accidentally hit send.
    on the above

so I have a minor leak which could be the shaft packing which I will check but
I noticed under the plug area on the bottom in the middle of the hull there is old
caulk around that area of the drain plug on the bottom exterior of the boat?
Is the caulk typical? Do all boats have this or did previous owner do for preventative
measures? What kind of caulk do I use to replace? Do I list keep on exterior and around brass
    drain plug?

all screws on bottom of haul are tight.

Any tips on checking shaft packing?

The leak is likely from the shaft packing as you say.

As for the caulking your seeing it is typical and good practice to use a marine sealant when "bedding" most items during installation to fiberglass (Fiber Reinforced Plastic or FRP). That said not all Marine sealants are the same. I have always liked the 3M series of marine sealants mostly because they are readily available, marketed in different consumer sizes and offer and ez to follow chart to determine the proper sealant for the job (google "3m marine sealant guide" you'll find it under Images).

Mostly I've only used the Fast Cure 5200 (things that should never require removal), Fast Cure 4200 (things that may need to be removed) and Fast Cure 4000 (when bonding to Glass, Lexan, ABS and Nylon plastics).

It could be the packing on the shaft, but do not forget to inspect the rubber muffler tubes, If they are original then they are 14 years old and can develop a leak.

Does your boat have dripless packing with bellows and a carbon flange? You may need to adjust the preload or possible o ring failure. these easily adjust with set screws or screwdriver depending on which brand it is. you can lookup the procedure on the packing website for pss or other manufacturer.
