    Stuck solenoid

Please Help. I have a 1986 Ski Eliminator with a fresh 351w. I just installed a new marine solenoid from Napa. I connected the batt+ and starter to the large posts, the yellow/red ignition wire to the S post and grounded the I post, (new electronic ignition) then re-connected the battery. When I turned the key the starter stayed engaged. I had to disconnect the battery to make it stop. I then disconnected the ignition wire and when reconnecting the batt it tried to start again. Disconnected the ground and the same thing happend! Ugh! So with just the batt and starter wires connected the starter engages and stays engaged. Seems to me my new solenoid is energized to start as soon as I connect the + cable. I hope someone can help me with what I did wrong in the first place and how can I remedy it? Btw voltage to the solenoid is 12.5v and only 11.5v from the ignition, don't know why. But some folks are suggesting standard batteries instead of deep cycles. But I doubt that would change the status of my solenoid would it? I appreciate your help!

Disconnect the I wire it should never be grounded. Take the solenoid back it is either defective or the main contacts are welded together.

Thanks for the reply Natiquehunter. Can you tell me where I should ground this solenoid since it doesn't ground at the bracket like automotive ones? And should I reconnect the orange ballast wire to the I terminal even though msd says to bypass this?
