    Centering steering wheel...

Tired the search function but didn't find anything. I have a 2006 SN 206. Boat is perfect but drives me nuts that the steering wheel is about 40 degrees off-center when the boat is going straight. Not being mechanically inclined, I'm wondering if there is an easy fix for this.

    Thanks.

There is an adjustment in the rudder for on center steering. Just be aware that the setting will guve different results at idle vs on plane. You could also consider indexing the steering wheel if the rudder is not straight with the steering wheel at center.

Thanks Ian. I am finding some info on other forums too. I will give it a go, doesn't seem to difficult.

Where are you in WI? My mom grew up in Stevens Point and she and my stepdad still have a great lake home on the Chain O' Lakes in Waupacca. Love it back there.

No. I'm sorry to be blunt, but NO. The adjustment you're referring to back at the rudder is not for centering the steering wheel. It's for adjusting the rudder throw so it's the same left to right. Do NOT adjust that unless you really know what you're doing.

To recenter your steering wheel, take the center cover off the wheel and remove the nylock nut. Pull the wheel off and put it back on where you want it.

Charles is right, most likely the rack/wheel moved a little when the steering cable was replaced, either remember or mark the wheel for straight ahead and then remove the nut and pull the wheel. The nut should a 3/4"

If you're going to do it right, do it all the way. First you need to make sure the rudder has equal travel left and right. My local dealer replaced my steering cable and didn't get that right. I wound up doing it myself. It's easy. Once you get that right, centering the steering wheel at the helm is also easy. Just pull it and center it with the rudder centered--best to do this on the water so you can get it centered. Then of course there's tuning the rudder with tabs to keep the wheel centered both at idle and under power.

I had the same issue. ..and here's how to solve this. ...did this twice actually since i took the rudder out to redo the seal the second time. ..
Look under your elm at the steering colum. ..you'll see 4 bolts...loosen those 4 bolts turn your steering where you want it to be, then re-tight the bolts. ..
Idealy you want to do this on the water. .drive slowly so the boat is going straight. ..then stop and adjust.
I was tempted to adjust the rudder as well. .but my dealer told me about this. ..and this works.
