Hours going up while boat is not running

Is it common that the hour meter runs while only the auxiliary is on, only radio playing? I have been on the water a ton this year, but meter says I have done over 100 hours!!! I have been on the water that much yes or more, but I have definitely not done that with the motor running. I have probably only done 20-30 hours of the boat running. Is this normal?

Good question. I have already put 112 hours on my 2017 G23 this summer and wondered as well if the hour meter runs while only the auxiliary is on playing the radio. Although I have been on the water a bunch this summer, the hours still seem high to me.

Yep exact thing I am running into. If so then we might as well throw our meters in the garbage! I buy what I think is low hours at 460 for an 03, and I am now at 560 with 3 months to go. I may have to go to a dealer and get the computer read, this sucker may have very low hours haha. My only worry is resale perception down the road.

This has a keypad ignition, right? If you are running the boat and press STOP (once), the hours *should* stop counting - this is what I'd call "accessory" position, like one click of a regular old keyswitch. From there, if you short-press the start button and the gauges move around, the hours start counting, whether the engine is running or not. But the stereo is on either way, it doesn't turn off unless you press stop twice consecutively or flip the main toggle switch down. I'm describing my boat, but mine is also an '03 SANTE.

I assume you are talking about the hour meter in the tach, by the way - that's a question, too.

If the hours are counting up while you're in 'accessory' mode, my guess something isn't wired right.

I am looking at the hours in the tach and yes it is keypad. When we stop I press the stop button 1 time, engine turns off, and everything turns off except my radio. When I do this I have no access to run gauges at all. It sounds like I am doing exactly what you do.

Yeah, so if the gauges aren't on, that is very strange that the hours are going up. I was hoping your answer would be, "well, the tach stays lit up after hitting stop..." You're doing the exact thing I do, with what sounds like the same setup, and having a different result. So I'm out of ideas for now...

Sorry was on in Mexico for a week . I will check it this weekend if the weather holds out. I will check the hours when I turn the boat off, and then check after turning it back on from sitting.

Intresting, do you hit STOP 2x or just once? It seems like my hours are going up to while minimal running hrs but lots of radio hours.

Just recently I have started to push stop button once to just have aux power for radio to see if will minimize engine hours . Up to 126 hours in season one. Seems insane but that is what the ticker is reading

I just hit stop 1 time and all gauges turn off. Literally everything except the radio is down. I kept forgetting to look at the hours before shutting down this weekend? I will check this weekend.

On my old boat, which was a 2008 210, the hours were reported from the engine ecm to the faria helmsman system. In other words you only increased hours with engine running...

I would think it would be this way on the newer boats too. Jeff any insite on this?

Same here, I keep forgetting. This weekend we went out for an hour or so, stopped for an hour (hit stop button once) and let the music play for another hour, then went home. I gotta remember next time to look at the hour meter before and after leaving it on for music!

I don't think mine is counting hours, though, because the gauge has no power (like yours) and I also have "only" put on about 45 hours this year, having purchased the boat in late June.

The clock shouldn't be running while the engine is off. With that said, I was always curious how some boats are so low on hours. With two one week vacations this year, we are over 100 hours. We pull those kids from almost sun-up to sundown.

Easy ( and fun ) to put hours on!
