I have a 1997 ski nautique gt 40 with 5.8..it runs and cranks fine but after using it awhile it just dies like u turn the key off. I can't figure out what's going on. I have fire and good gas. Fuel pump is holding pressure..i have changed the spark module out on it. Took to shop and it runs fine for them. It's like something gets hit and it just turns the boat off. Sometimes it runs for hours other times 10 minutes..please help.

No..it does not crank right back up..i usually wait awhile and then it does but it usually dies again pretty soon so I hurry to get it back to boat ramp. After a guy told me to change the module it ran all day. The next day I got about 20 minutes in and all it did was die. I had to tow it that day as l could not get it to crank back up.

If it runs fine when it's cold but starts failing when it gets warm, it might be the ignition coil.

Yes that's what I was told. However it just does it when it wants to. Sometimes it runs for hours other times it does not run long before it happens. When guy took it out for a test drive he said it ran great for 20 minutes. He parked it and got some friend then went back to boat and said it died about a minute into going back out. I definitely will change the coil. Thank u so much for ur input

I had a 97 ski Nautique with the exact same issue. Would run great but after things got warm it would just die, then no crank for a couple minutes and then start backup. Ultimately the problem for me was a corroded fuse holder on the positive wire that goes from the battery to power the ECU. This in-line fuse holder should be a couple inches from the battery. It would heat up, expand and break the electrical connection.... without the ECU powered the boat would die and stay dead until the fuse cooled and the electrical connection was restored. Definitely check yours and replace. I found mine as I noticed the fuse was really hot when the boat had failed. I ended up replacing the enter wire just to be 100% and the problem never came back.

Nautique Parts or Skidim will have it..... you have a low pressure pump and high pressure pump to test out as I believe that boat has a fuel control cell.

The low pressure pump is easily visible on the front of the engine, you can hear and feel it operate when you turn the key on but don't start the engine. You should always hear it come on for 2 or 3 seconds. If it doesn't, it's likely the relays on the back of the engine. I had these relays fail on my GT40 intermittently, so when I would turn the key off and on a few times the low pressure pump would not come on every time, replaced the relays and it was good to go. There are 2 back there, I think the other is for ECU but not sure. They are inexpensive so best change both.
If you know you're losing fuel pressure then I'm guessing you have a test gauge connected to the fuel rail and can see what the pressure is doing while operating the engine. Basically the low pressure pump brings a lot of fuel from the tank to keep the fuel cell full of gas, then the high pressure pump in there is what pumps a smaller amount of fuel into the fuel rails to the injectors at high pressure. Both need to be working, maybe someone more mechanically inclined can comment on how to test the high pressure pump as I never had to do that in my case.
