I replaced my impellar and can not reseal the water pump. The gasket didn't work so I used rtv silicone and it still leaks in the same spot. Any suggestions?

Some auto places or motorcycle shops have a gasket maker. Take your housing down and have them make something for you that's thicker than normal.

If that doesn't work, I have no idea.

It should seal with the gasket and a little RTV. You may have already done this, so bare with me....

      1. Remove the entire pump from the boat and put it on the bench. I think some people change make the repairs without removing the pump but I only do that once in awhile.
      2. Verify that you have all the old gasket removed. Sometimes it appears it's all off until you start scraping.

      Good luck

My pump was leaking during the shake-down cruise this year too. Check your O-ring. Mine got out of the groove and was flattened. I had my old one still in the boat and replaced the bad one with that. Everything was fine after that.

Thanks for the replies. I did take the pump out twice and scraped everything clean.

PJ - when you say o-ring, do you mean the paper gasket?

No, the little rubber ring gasket. It's probably 1.5" diameter and fits inside the little groove you should be able to see running around the housing between where the 2 sides bolt up.

I don't think mine has the rubber o ring. Maybe that is the problem. jDo all of the pumps use the o ring?

                RE: water pump leaking!!!

Mine had no oring, just the paper gasket on the wear plate. Is it leaking from the wear/rear plate?? Maybe you have a blown seal on the shaft??

Check the wear plate edges and the pump housing edges for flatness too. You can take a stone over them to remove any burs, although there should not be any. You will see marks and a bit of grooving on the wear plate from the impeller spinning, check the edges around it. I put a light coating of silicone grease on the surfaces and them sandwiched the gasket.

My dealer said mine was leaking, so they replaced it under warranty. I have the old one, but don't know where it was leaking from.

Many pumps do not have the spacer shim as shown above. I have only seen the pumps with the o-ring. A gasket and o-ring would be needed on the pump above, it seems.

My pump is different than yours but it is leaking at site A. I can sit it shoot out from the same spot no matter what I do.

                            water pump leak

if you use the old gasket,it may be the reason of the leak since the old gasket become too thin or cracked, try to make a new gasket with ordinary gasket sheet get from electric material shop .

Most/many new impellars come with all sorts of different gaskets and o-ring to fit many different housing. Whatever gasket you use, it must be very thin as to not create too much tolerance between the impellar and housing.
