Looking at a 1995 super sport. Any advice would be helpful. This will be the family's first boat. Anything that's a typical problem on these? Anything specific I should be looking for during the test drive?

Google inboard check list for a general overview of what you'll want to check on these boats. There really isn't anything specific to test in the boat. For the most part what you see is what you get.
Test drive should give you a good idea of the engine condition.
Check for hesitation or vibration while driving.
Make sure all gages lights etc work. Anything can be fixed but these call all help with the negotiation.
Make sure the trailer is in decent condition. New trailers are expensive. 4k to 6k, used trailers are hard to find.
Replacing the vinyl on a seat or two isn't too bad, redoing the whole boat is 3k or 4k.
Hours and overall condition say alot. The boat is 20years old so won't be perfect but shouldn't be trashed either. Take pics and post em here for advice.

Thanks. 830 hrs. Has a full vinyl wrap that's a little scraped up (to be expected I think), full cover, new vinyl except for bow (not sure why they didn't do that), no pad in the playpen. He's asking $12000 firm. Haven't been able to line up a test ride, and it's sitting in a slip, so I don't know what the trailer condition is. Let me know what you think!

The look of the boat has been changed significantly. I don't think it looks too bad but it's not great either( would be easier to tell in person). From the bow the original colours where black and teal. Not the most popular colours scheme for a Nautique(my last boat was a teal 1995 Sport). The updated look may affect resale but I'll leave it up to you to decide if you like it or not.
800 hours is average for a boat of that age, less hours wouldn't be any better as it would mean the boat wasn't used much which can be bad for an engine.
The issue with wraps is you don't know what's under it. I'd guess he just wasn't a fan of the old school color scheme and just wanted to update it but make sure to ask him if there is any damage under there. Look at the condition of the unwrapped parts of the boat. Look for signs of damage on the gunnells, dash and underneath. Make sure the gages all work and check the condition of the engine.
Definitely make sure there is a trailer and it is usable.
Now for the good stuff,
That boat will produce an amazing wake and with the new suck gates and some ballast it will also produce a good surf wave. It's pretty impossible to get a boat as good as that with a tower for wakeboarding for under 12k. If you are happy with how it looks and there are no issues on the water test then considered it.
If you think you'd want to get the boat back to original, then walk away as you'd be better off getting something thats not updated.

For $12k it looks decent. Doesn't look perfect by any means but if it's mechanically sound including engine and trailer I'd probably buy it for $12k and have a ton of fun.

If you like the way it currently looks $12k is not bad for the boat if it is mechanically sound.
Make sure it gets on plane without hesitation. When in neutral check to see if/how much the prop shaft spins.
Check the v-drive fluid. It is accessible underneath the middle rear seat.
Check the condition of the exhaust manifolds and risers. You don't want excessive rust as that's a $1k job in just parts.
'95 used a special high pressure fuel pump that is no longer available. There are options though.
If you're mechanically inclined these boats are easy to work on.

I agree on the super sport, but it's pretty suspect. Sellers communication has not been good, and too many odd things that just don't seem to add up. I think I'm going to pass on it since I can't even get the seller to call. Only emails.

Still if you are a wakeboarder, skip the Ski. Look for Sport Nautique or another boat. You can do better than the ski.
Use seachtempest.com to search Craigslist around your post code and don't be afraid to drive for the right boat. Now is the time to get a deal.
