Strange odor

I am asking this question for my neighbor. He has a '97 Ski and has been noticing a smell he has described as rotten onions. He is meticulous when it comes to caring for his boat and has looked all over for a dead animal or some other source of the smell. He did have his engine rebuilt this past winter. He also says that he can smell the same smell on my 2000 but it is only very faint coming from the front vents. I can't smell anything on my boat but I agree his does stink. Anyone have any suggestions? This guy is so anal about his boat and this is driving him insane

I have a 97 Ski also, 1625 hours. Take everything out of the boat. Take the back seat out of the boat. Remove the engine cover, and pull out the back center section of the floor. Pull the carpeted cover from the gas tank.
At this point the only places left you can not get to are behind the gas tank, and the cavity that goes from the engine compartment forward to the box in front of the drivers feet kick panel.
Pressure wash everything, even under the gunnels. If a blackish dirt comes out of the carpet, it is mold. If the smell persists, you should be able to sniff around and find the source of the smell. There is also a large bellows that goes from the top deck the the hull by the drivers seat something dead might be there

Check your blower vent hoses for water. If you have somehow gotten water in them, I have heard that the smell can be terrible. Another member of this site had that problem. I'll see if I can find the thread.
