You assumed correctly, there is not much more too it than that. I am an amateur compared to 95% of the people on this forum and I think I have a pretty good grasp on it. If it doesn't turn out perfect the first time with finesse, do it again. Use the type of pad that 3m suggests on the back of the bottle and of course there are tons of you tube videos that can give you a run down. And I would suggest covering or taping vinyl and fixtures. The fine particles end up shooting all over the place from the buffer.

Zirb3L is right - I used this: http://3mmarine.com/products/compounds-polishes/buffing (light oxidation) and one of the 3M yellow wool pads on a buffer. I was impressed with how relatively easy it was to get a good shine. I don't think my job on it is perfect, but it looks a lot better than before, and for minimal time and money.

I too have had great results from finesse it II. It give the gel that brand new wet look.

One trick I recently discovered is to use a light, like the one in your phone to shine onto the gel coat. This gives you a pretty good idea of the condition of your gel.

One great gel you should get almost a mirror reflection of the light and any hazing or scratches should be easy to see.
