    Battery’s

    Just winterize my boat.
My questions is how should I go about storing way my battery’s? I have a regular charger and battery tender. Should I leave them on a trickle for the winter or is it better to just do it ever so often?

    Thanks you in advance!

To start, im not a fan of pulling batteries. Too may spring time calls about boat wont start, stuff wont work, sparks and now something is blown, etc. So, in most cases, make sure they are full of water, fully charged, turn off the main switch and dont worry.

I would not leave any charger or tender on them, unless its a smart charger thats designed for that purpose. Many "tenders" will deliver a constant, but small, charger. That can eventually ruin a battery.

I pull my battery and toss it inside for the winter. I maybe toss the tender on it once or twice through the winter for a few hours. My boat is stored off site though. If it was in my garage, I wouldn't pull it.

I take mine out of the boat as well. Lead acid batteries don't much like being cold and being left alone all winter. I keep them in a reasonably warm basement and charge them up once every other month or so during the winter.

I don't understand the notion of how it's bad or difficult to remove and install batteries. Sure, they're heavy but it's simple tools and skills to do it.

I used to subscribe to the view above. But this year I am with MLA. The batteries in g21 look tight to pull out. So I made sure they were fully charged, turned off the battery switch and left them in when I sent the boat off to the barn.
