Need help with v-drive warning light on 2003 SAN

Need yalls help here.....we just bought a used '03 yesterday. Today was our first outing and I noticed after an hour or so that the v-drive light stayed on regardless of speed. Now it is possible that it had been on the whole time since it was sunny out and it is kinda hard to see. When we picked up the boat, they topped off all the fluids.

From other posts it seems like:

    A) The oil sensor is bad
    or
    B) The light hadn't been on the whole time and I have a leak somewhere.

The whole time the v-drive seemed silky smooth and never grinded. I will check tomorrow to see if I see any residue around the v-drive unit indicating a leak.

If it is indeed the sensor is there any way to test it to make sure it is faulty, or is it enough of an assumption that, if the unit is full and the light stays on then it is bad? I would prefer to be able to measure resistance or something with a DMM to figure out if it is faulty.

If it is bad, anyone know how much the sensors are (ballpark)?

    Thanks for all the help!

    V-drive warning light

The warning light is controlled by the pressure switch attach to the V-drive body, when there are no oil pressure, the switch shorted together, when you messure with dvm it shows 0 reistance, the switch will open when pressure is make (over 1200rpm) than the light will goes off, will stay onf if V-drive oil is not enough, since you light stay on always, seems you have a stick switch or somewhere circuit short, fot test ,remove one terminal of the sensor switch, clip the terminl with cordcodie clip and connect to a simple battery-bulb circuit, and run the the boat, to see change of the bulb.

Check the oil level in your V drive. The sensor senses oil pressure. The two conditions where it comes on are low oil in the V-drive blocked screen keeping oil from the pump (Very Rare) and a bad sensor. I would bet on low oil.

          Rick are the two conditions:
          1) low oil
          2) blocked screen (can you describe where this screen is located, and is it accessible?

          Or
          Bad sensor

Sorry for all the questions...just wanted to make sure that I was clear on what you stated.

          Cheers

The screen is inside the V drive, at the oil pickup. It shouldn't have a problem unless someone put the wrong oil in the V-drive and it coagulated in the drive. Look at the oil if it's stringy or really thick that may be the cause.

                    RE: V-drive warning light

Since the sensor is so low it looks like you would have to drain all the oil out first in order to replace it...is that correct?

Yesterday, I checked the fluid level and it was at the full mark, so I think that the sensor is faulty.

Anyone have a part number and/or cost of this sensor?

                    Thanks!
