I had some issues at the very end of the season with one of the fuel pumps (2003 Excalibur 330). The 20 Amp fuse blew for the fuel pumps. I didn't think much of it because there was no issue before the fuse blew and after I changed it everything was fine. I work on electronics for a living, so I troubleshot everything, but couldn't find issues. Last day of the season, was out for about 4 hours. Dropped off at dock, turned around to head back out and upon throttle up, the boat died. It would crank and stumble and try to run. Seemed like it had no fuel. The next morning, turned over and idled fine in the garage. So I'm thinking one of the pumps is on it's way out. I plan to replace both and not mess around with troubleshooting a dead boat on a family outing.
Two questions:
The fuel pumps are from Carter. I believe I have a part number direct from Carter for the low pressure pump. There was an old # that crosses to a new number. Not that I don't want to support our sponsors or other inboard parts suppliers, but it is much cheaper elsewhere. Anyone have experience with this?
Second, anyone ever put a pre-filter [fuel filter] inline just before the low pressure pump? I thought it would be a good idea, but maybe overkill. This would be a throw away inline filter that could prevent anything from getting into the pumps.
Thanks!
