    Fuel Pump and Filter Questions

I had some issues at the very end of the season with one of the fuel pumps (2003 Excalibur 330). The 20 Amp fuse blew for the fuel pumps. I didn't think much of it because there was no issue before the fuse blew and after I changed it everything was fine. I work on electronics for a living, so I troubleshot everything, but couldn't find issues. Last day of the season, was out for about 4 hours. Dropped off at dock, turned around to head back out and upon throttle up, the boat died. It would crank and stumble and try to run. Seemed like it had no fuel. The next morning, turned over and idled fine in the garage. So I'm thinking one of the pumps is on it's way out. I plan to replace both and not mess around with troubleshooting a dead boat on a family outing.

    Two questions:

The fuel pumps are from Carter. I believe I have a part number direct from Carter for the low pressure pump. There was an old # that crosses to a new number. Not that I don't want to support our sponsors or other inboard parts suppliers, but it is much cheaper elsewhere. Anyone have experience with this?

Second, anyone ever put a pre-filter [fuel filter] inline just before the low pressure pump? I thought it would be a good idea, but maybe overkill. This would be a throw away inline filter that could prevent anything from getting into the pumps.

    Thanks!

I would bet it is your low pressure pump. Pulling your lanyard also disables the fuel pumps, be sure that it was fully engaged. Curious what the part numbers are for Carter pumps. Do they have the same electrical connection or will you need to modify it?? Have wondered about the pre-filter myself, some years have them stock while others do not??

If you look at that pump above, P4594, it says in the last line that it is for big blocks. Check out the Carter P 4389,it has the same spec's as the original PCM part. Don't know about the Chevy's Mr Q but the older Fords plugs don't match anyway. N3 replaced mine when I bought it,they cut the plugs off and spliced it together

I put an inline filter on my '99 SAN with GT40 about 4 years ago after LP pump failure (pump was full of debris)...no issues.

Thanks for that info about the fuel filter.

I talked to Carter some more about the pump models and then found a few filter choices on the Holley website.

I'm gearing up for a project after the holidays. I think I'm going to replace the lines to and from the tank with newer hose that is more robust for ethanol fuel while I'm in there.

Skidave what did you find out about the Carter fuel pump? I’m in need of a LP fuel pump for my gt40 and was curious if the Carter 4594 would work.

I went with a Carter 4389 and just pirchased it from rockauto.com

I also replaced my high pressure pump and filter at the same time. I added an inline filter before the LP pump.

HP pump from Discount Inboard Marine part RA080025A, filter kit for the FCC and inline filter RA80024A.

                No issues since...

I recently installed the carter low pressure pump on my 2005 SAN. It ran great for a short test fire there after...The next day it died soon after leaving the dock. Now it will only fire and run for 2-3 seconds.

does the pump take some time to prime? or is it safe to say the pump is not getting power?

Any help here would be appreciated

                  Thanks
