When to replace the distributor cap

Is there an approx hour on when to replace the cap? I have an 02 196 with the 5.0 and I would assume its the original cap. Hours are low, 230. Runs fine but need to order a replacement impeller and wondering what else might need to be done at the same time.

There are a couple of ways to know. The most obvious is a ignition skip. You'll hear and feel it when it just misses because one cylinder didn't fire. The boat will also be down on power.

Next, you can visually inspect it. Get it off the distributor and take a look at the contacts inside. If they're worn and pitted, it's probably time. You should replace the rotor at the same time.

Distributor and rotor are not listed on a maintenance schedule but I would go ahead and take a look at them every 5 or 600 hundred hours and maybe replace. I bought mine for my 210 on ebay for $15 bucks for my 2008 210. Who knows maybe you get better gas mileage.
