G23 Battery Rotate?

I am not super familiar with how things are wired, but would it be a good idea to rotate the batteries every season or so on the current gen G23? We typically use the boat with the battery switch in position A (single battery), and keep it in the off position all other times. We also have the battery maintenance system, and use it to keep things topped off as needed. I would switch between batteries, but I believe the options are single or both "on" if I am not mistaken.

In this scenario, wouldn't one battery be getting worked more than the other? Both get charged, but one is the primary battery. To even out battery life, etc. should you rotate them? Or should we be using things differently?

Good question. I'm interested in the responses as well

Here's what I do:

- I go out in the morning and look at my phone to see what day of the month it is.

- If it's an even number, Battery 2.

- If it's an odd number, Battery 1.

This way I'm more-or-less evenly using both batteries.

I think this is a valid question/concern.

charlesml3, I am not sure that you have the same type of battery switch that the OP is talking about. You can't choose between 1 and 2 on the newer switch (at least in a G). It is either single battery or both, and there is no choice for a specific battery to use as the single battery.

Then that must have changed in 2018. In my 2017, I have 1, 2, Off, All.

So on the new one if you pick Single, how do you know which battery it's using?

My 2017 had the new type of switch.

And to answer your question about which battery, I suppose you could check the wiring, but I never did that on my '17. I guess it doesn't really matter, but that's the reason the OP is asking about rotation them every year.

My switch has primary battery, or both batteries - no other options. You wouldn't want to run in both, as you have no reserve if the charge goes down. I would love it if it had three positions, as I could rotate the primary battery with some process as charlesml3 described.

I think with the two position battery switch, it would be a good idea to rotate the batteries at some interval to equalize wear and tear. My guess is that battery A gets hammered, and battery b does not get exercised - maybe not good for either.

If someone has any additional info or insight, I (and it seems others) would love to hear it.

The switch will allow you to do all the rotating you need. No need to physically move the battery position.

Ok, just found the info I was looking for that shows the different panels on our boats.

Here's the normal panel that most of us are familiar with. This is NOT the panel we're discussing here.






Below are the different panels on the GS and G Series boats.

As you can see, there are several different types.

If your boat is a GS-series, you get the standard switch.

If you have a G-series with the Elite or Studio Elite packages, you get the switch that just allows you to use one battery or both, but doesn't allow you to set which battery it uses if you're just using one.

Yep, the last two are the switches that I have seen in the G's - no way to select either individual battery (primary battery or both batteries).

That's not true with the switch we're talking about.

So his 16 has the dual circuit plus switch? if so, then its even easier! The banks are used different and therefore should be different battery types, this no rotating needed.

Main cranking bank should be a cranking battery, house bank should be a deep cycle.
