No problem to change the helm, mine was quite worn at the front end where the nylon bushes go so I bored it out and made a bush from bronze, dony know how long it will last but ok for now. still 3 months away from our ski season

I am not a wiz kid, and still learning, but if you need to change the helm basically it's the parts between the steering wheel and the cable, I have found out that there was a change in cables around mid ninetys when the shape of the rack was changed and the bolt center's were also changed, the easiest way to identify the cable is by the number stamped on it, however my cable was stamped with ssc15479 which had all the Brit Teleflex dealers baffled, I found out this was the old numbering system and the 7 indicates a half foot, I would not have expected to see your helm worn out at the hours on your boat, my 1997 196 has 1400 hours on it and was owned by a ski school.
I am in the throws of re-building the boat although the interior is good she is a little tired and worn in some places, once the steering is sorted I will move on to the shift and throttle control.
Have found this site and CCF a great source of information.

Yeh, we have a 1978 sn on the dock just now but needed moor boat space for the grand kids, so bought the 196 that runs on propane gas half the price of petrol over here, probably do the 78 when it comes off the lake, it's only got 680 hours on it, apparently spent a lot of its life on the back of a super yacht in the med.
so plenty to learn about.
