    Tandem axle tire wear problems?????

I have a Dorsey tandem axle trailer for my 2001 SAN. I have noticed that my rear tires are wearing much quicker than the front tandems. After measuring the trailer height I think my reciever is 2" low. But wouldn't you think the ceciever being low would put more weight on the front tires and wear them quicker? I'm confused. Has anyone ever noticed this.

    Thanks for your help

because you have more weight on your front tires, that is causing them to be the pivot point of the trailer when turning (and rarely to you ever drive a directly straight line). if the front tires are the pivot point, then the rear tires are being dragged more latteraly across the asphalt when turning, resulting in more wear...

the flipside is the tandem axle trailers tow beter in my opinion...they jerk the vehicle less and reduce tongue weight on the hitch. all you have to do is buy the appropriate hitch for the appropriate tow height to eliminate that problem. i have been towing the same boat 20 miles round trip to the lake for three years and (300 hrs of run time) and have yet to see any significant tire wear... i did have to buy a different hitch when i traded vehicles, though....

You're going to have a certain amount of wear from tire scrub during turns. Like TDC said, get the proper height hitch. Then rotate the tires once a season.

The wear pattern is acting like the tire pressure is low. It is wearing towards the outside of the tread. I checked the tire pressure and it is at 55psi. which is 5psi over recommended. The tire even squats a little compared to the front tandem.

Got the right hitch, lets see if that fixes it.

                Rotate them often.
