94 Sport with ProTech TBI has a skip in engine

Hey guys, I have a 94 Sport with a ProTech throttle body injection system. About 4 years it developed a mild skip or misfire condition. I took it to the dealer and after 3 months they said that they could not find a problem. I have been living with it until last July. While skiing last July it started running extremely bad, spitting & sputting, but I did make it back to the dock. The next day it wouldn't even crank!! I made some phone calls and was told to replace the spark plugs and wires and fuel filter. I did this and it ran great (even better than before) for about 2 weeks. Then the same old skipping problem returned!! Out of frustration I parked the boat over the winter. This spring I had a friend of mine (an ASE certified Master mechanic) come out and try to help me figure it out. We ran every test that there is: compression, leak down, fuel pressure, timing, spark to plug, vacuum, we even tested the sensors (MAS, water, etc...) with a multimeter. Basically we determined that the engine is fine and there must be an igition or electrical problem. After talking to SKIDIM I purchased and installed (last week) a new coil pack from them. This made no difference at all!!! Needless to say that I am very frustrated and need any help that you can provide. Thanks, Scott.

Hang on to the coil pack...they are becoming hard to find and expensive for the Pro Tec ignition system!!!

Check and clean ALL ground wire connections (the main grounds are located at one of the bellhousing to engine bolts). This system is extremely sensitive to poor grounds. Would be a good idea to go ahead and clean all other electrical connections. Also make sure wire connections at ignition switch are clean and tight.

you mentioned it ran better after replacing fuel filter and plugs and wires. Did you recheck your new fuel filter when it stopped running this time? You may have some junk in the tank or fuel line problems. Just an idea.

Hey guys, I just wanted to give an update. A friend of mine suggested that I put some plug wire anti-arcing silicon on the spark plugs & caps. I did this and it ran good for about a day, then it started cutting out again. I figured I better try what Pachanga said about the fuel having trash in it. I drained all of the fuel out and removed the fuel tank. When I flushed the tank out, I found about a handful of black stuff. What is this stuff and what do I need to do next? I assume it is from fuel line and gaskets deteriorating. Should I replace these since I have the tank out? I will also replace the fuel filter. Thanks for your input.

hey, you have a Pro Tech coil pack? Send me an email, maybe I will buy it off you if it's the same one I have.
              thanks!

When you change the plugs, you notice wet on the plugs? if your engine begin with water leak ,the symtom will like that.

Hey guys, sorry but I have not had a chance to work on the boat lately. I took it out for only the second time this year on Saturday 9-10-06 and the same old problem still exists. I now have a new problem, over heating. I ordered a new impeller for the water intake. I also have a new set of spark plugs but have not had a chance to put them in yet. I do have an extra coil pack but I think that I will hang on to it for a while at least until I figure out what is wrong with the boat. I will keep you posted. Thanks again for your responses.

I just got over a similar condition on my 94 Sport with the TBI 5.8 Proboss. I would have an occasional bad missing condition at anything about 2000rpm. Only happened a few times. It turned out to be a combination of 2 things.
                    1) One of the 4 injectors was clogged and not spraying properly. This was fixed with some BG44 cleaner that was put in by the tech. Have you checked the spray patterns of the injectors.
                    2) Luckilly this problem reproduced while the tech was running it. Could have been a nightmare to find. A loose wire was causing one of the injectors to quit randomly.

We also changed the fuel filter and plugs. Plus he did a tuneup. Timing was off 1 degree.

After all this the boat ran great.

                    Hope it helps

Also check your raw water strainer when you do the impeller for the overheat condition.

I had a very similar situation with my 94 Ski, Closed Bow, 5.8 ProBoss. The boat would run rough over 2500 rpm and then shut off. I'd then fire it back up and it would be fine for a couple of days. Then all of a sudden, rough and shut off again.

Worked with the dealer for a while to try to pinpoint the problem but could never get it to happen with the mechanic present. After describing all the symptoms to the dealer, we finally concluded that the fuel injection system was faulty (which apparently is common with boats around this year). We yanked all the EFI gear out, threw in a good ol' carburetor, and the boat runs fantastic!!!

Good luck and let us know when you figure it out.

I had a similar problem on my '91 sport. I installed the above kit from skidim and it worked great until I sold it. I recommend the conversion kit to replace the Pro Tec system.

boy you got took on a ride and took the hook line and sinker, 1 degree of timing isn't going to change anything, especially on a DIS system that you can't change the timing on to start with they must love you at the marina and all of the money you waiste or give them.

                              Wow....

Considering they fixed the issue, I am satisified with the service. Why the attitude?
