throttle bogging down/ shut off while riding

2006 sv211te .. about 2 hours into riding with full ballast and 6 total people in boat. while using stargazer perfect pass the boat started to idle down and actually shut off at one point. no red flags/trouble on guages temp, amp. we turned off perfect pass and had same issue. re started boat and returned to dock. Upon loading boat on trailer it was found sea strainer had moderate amount of weeks covering pretty much 100 percent of metal mesh inside. would this cause the engine to throttle down and or shut off while in operation?any other idea what could be causing the issue? thanks

If it was overheating it could have gone into safe mode to protect the engine?

Sounds like possible fuel delivery issue. Could be filter, pumps, clogged vent, etc. just a few guesses since no codes or warning issues. If you overheated you should have gotten warnings.
