bent my prop and shaft late last season. finally putting it all back together. converting to dripless system. Can anyone tell me the ideal place to tap into the water supply?

No that little fitting is for draining your transmission cooler. you hook up to that and it will suck air rather then push water. we normally "T" into one of the 1" hoses going to the exhaust manifold from the thermostat housing for water supply to the dripless seal. a quality XPC Seal kit would have come with that "T".

Crap. I read somewhere that this was a good spot. I have the PSS system and it didn't come with the adapter. They're $50 extra plus the ride.

I found this. I see what you're saying. That spot is on the suction side. So you're recommending something like this guy has sketched

Interesting, I'm about to install my dripless tomorrow and the mechanic at the dealer said to tap into the trans cooler as well.

I hadn't even cracked open the package on my XPC kit but sure enough the fitting is there and in instructions recommend tapping into the raw water pressure side with the included fitting.

Guess I should double check everything the dealer recommends!

If that is what your dealer Mechanic is telling you then you might want to find another mechanic! The drawing above is correct. water supply to a dripless seal needs to come from the pressure side of the raw water cooling system. a good stocked Low's or Home depot will have brass fittings that can be utilized. I prefer to take the water coming off the thermostate housing over the hose right out of the raw water pump. have actually seen instances where the hose was blown off from the direct pump pressure.

He's been the mechanic there for many years too, super nice guy, BUT... That being said there's a reason I'm the only one who works on my boat or any my cars for that matter.

Just about finished mine up today, I had one **** of a time getting the coupling off of the shaft, took A LOT of heat to finally get it off. got about another .5" of pounding to get it back in place, sadly the sun decided it was done before I was so I'll wrap it up tomorrow. Definitely not the most fun I've ever had working on my boat!

Wow, that's a heck of a lot of work to fix a non-issue.

Yes and no, I keep my boat in the water during the summer and I can't put a lift in my slip at the marina. It's always bugged me having some water in the bilge, so this was worth it to me to have a dry bilge.

OK, I guess. No matter what you do, you're going to have some water in your bilge. The amount that comes in via a "drip" style packing pales in comparison to the amount that skiers, boarders, and kids bring in.

My 99 Air dripped (just as it should) for the entire 17 years I had it. I stuck a cup under it one day to see, and I figured it would drip about 2 quarts in about 12 hours. It dripped a bit more when under way.
