    Frustating Starting Problem, 2011 210 ZR409

Hi guys, I am hoping someone can shed some light on this problem as it is driving me a bit crazy at the moment. I have posted about it before a couple of years ago when it first happened but at that time it disappeared on its own with no accurate diagnosis. Anyway it has recently been happening on and off again and despite my best efforts I have not been able to isolate the offending part(s).

The boat is a 2011 Coastal Edition 210 with the Crusader 409. I am on about 600 hours now. It does not have the LINC system but has the gauges and normal key. Original problem was at turning the key just a click behind the dash. As I said it went away the first time and didn't recur until more recently when it has been happening more and more often and now it won't start again. When it does start it is strong and there is no clicking at the starter or solenoid as you see when the battery is weak. Sometimes the starting sequence begins but it aborts before ignition. I do not have a dealer anywhere near me so am on my own with this one.

This is what I have done/checked so far:

New battery, terminals, earth at side of motor.
    Starter relay replaced
Kill switch seems to work fine and boat is in neutral.
I am getting 12V at the positive terminal on the starter.
Everything looks ok behind the dash.

The other day I was looking at the terminals on the starter and when I moved the black wrapped cable that goes from the solenoid to the back of the main starter it worked fine for a day or two. Since that time I have moved it around a bit again and no luck, could there be a bad connection or corrosion in the starter or terminals?

Would corrosion within the battery isolator and breaker box cause something like this? I often get a bit of leakage from bags back there and I am in brackish water. I haven't opened that up to look just yet.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions, hopefully I can get it sorted out quickly, its pretty frustrating because once it starts the boat is running perfectly!

Sounds like it could be the starter or started solenoid on its way out. You could start by pulling the starter and have it bench tested. At least you'd know if that is the culprit. Any auto parts store can test it for you.

If you are near coast, corrosion could be causing an issue. Could it be ignition connection or going bad? i mention that cause I have a push button system where I press the ignition button and THEN the start button. Last summer, when pressing ignition button, nothing happened....luckily after 20mins of messing with it, it worked and it was determined that ignition button was going bad, so another option anyway to check into. I would think you could test with voltmeter when its working....vs when not to see if that is the issue, or if starter/soleniod since that seems like a high possibility too.
Once you get her figured out, I would spray anti-corrosion spray on all those terminals to seal them to slow down issues in future

Thanks for the responses. I am indeed near the coast and corrosion somewhere on the line was my first thought...

Anyway I got the starter out, its the bottom bolted one. Got it bench tested and the starter itself seems to be working just fine, just a little stiff but I got it cleaned up nicely inside. The solenoid however is dead. I am busy trying to find a replacement at the moment. Not the easiest part to find in South Africa....

Well that would most certainly explain the problem. Please update us when you get it back together.

I was going to say you either did not have a strong battery or bad connection or the solenoid. The clicking is the solenoid not staying engaged. Its been a long time but on the older boats you could jump over the solenoid with an insulated screwdriver to get the boat started. Then don't turn it off...

Check your battery grounds on the block for corrosion.
