2007 Super air 220 vinyl ripping question

hi fans. I am back on the site again as the new season approaches. I have just sold my 2002 Sante and I am now looking at buying a 2007 220 super air in mint condition. I know that there are many mixed feelings about this boat but I will mainly using it for surfing. My question here is that I hear all the seats in the back rip at the seam because it is all one piece. What fixes out there are being done for this issue. I don't feel like sewing it together and I heard it was an actual recall from correct craft. Can someone shed some more light on this for me.

    Much appreciated

Not sure if it’s the same issue I have with my ‘07 210 SANTE, but I literally just dropped both my backseats at an upholstery guy this morning. When I bought the boat it had a small tear in one seat and the other side developed the exact same tear a year later. My Nautique shop guys said that they just came out with factory replacement skins which I got and are being put on. It’s that textured vinyl that tore.

Here are some pics I took for the shop people to look at. Should be a quick job for them. All in all, should be about $600. Ugh.

I have had three seats tear out at the seams on my 08 210 sante. I question the thread being used. My wife works for a marine upholstery shop. The owner said they made the stitches too close together . Too many needle holes in the vinyl weakens it and causes the failure. The shame is I also own 84,89 and 92 supras although they do have some vinyl issues because of age none of them have seam rips?

What models/years is this common? I'm slowly starting the hunt for something in the 99-05 range.

I have a 2008 220 that had tears in all the “L” shaped seats between the back and the seat. I just recently took them to an upholstery shop and made the decision to repair them in 2 separate pieces. They are now like a car seat, in 2 pieces. The app is not allowing me to attach pictures - sorry. They kept the red piping intact so they look connected. I like the look and hope the repair is durable.

hi josh, this is exactly the case. The boat I just boat has smal tiny tears just starting. It is literally in min condition and the reason being I think the seats are still decent is that they owner only used aerospace 303 for the entire life of the bot and keeps the vinyl softer and more flexible which means it is less likely the seats will rip. However I see many other boats from when I was shopping and these guys spend a fortune each year just re stitching that seam and fixing it. I am looking for that permanent fix like what you did. I would love to see pictures and how much it costed.

Hi Sumo, did you have to order the skin custom? I would like to know if it is still in one piece or if they separated it in 2 pieces. Have 3 brand new covered seats like that for 600$ seems very reasonable. Keep is updated.

It wont look as good, but one way to get more life out of it, is too not have any seams in the vinyl....and do entire seat out of a single piece (least as much as possible), some of the seams are so it will sit right, but I usually see seams tearing, not the actual vinyl....so its a thot.
Another thing you could do (this is what I just did to my boat to keep the seams from tearing again) I added a "step" into the back seat so that no one steps on the vinyl of the back seat, that should help preserve it (the new G3 boats have something similar). Mine is 2014 and the seam was starting to come apart cause people step on seat to get up to sundeck walk-thru each time...directly where you step there is a seam and over time its gonna come apart no matter what you do. I removed vinyl....installed a solid insert (using HDPE) into the foam.....then had new skin installed over insert and then installed this black piece of HDPE that you see that will act as a step. I screwed this piece down, thru the vinyl and into the insert below the new vinyl so it sandwiches the new vinyl. (I also have a piece of Aqua Marine decking that will go over this step, to give it a finished look and so it wont be slippery when you step on it.

Each L seat skin came in two pieces. They got rid of the “textured” vinyl that came original and went with just normal smooth material. I will say that I was glad that they now make OEM skins, as my buddy with the exact same boat had to have custom skins made just a couple of years ago for the same problem. Way more expensive and a lot more time.

                      Hi Sumo,

Where did the skins come from ? Were they made custom for the colors ?

I got my skins from my local Nautique dealership/shop. They are matched with the OEM colors (white and grey for me). No custom ordering needed!

I’d throw pics up but it’s not allowing me!

I’ll also say that I don’t have multiple small tears, but one on each seat with long tears.

I believe Nautiqueparts changed the design of the fabric on these seats on the 09 for this reason. When I swapped interior on my 07 220, I could not buy the old skin style from Nautique. They required you to buy the whole new rear seats, with a new skin pattern.
