Prop replacement question OJ vs ACME

Just replaced my slightly dinged up acme 2561 with a Johnson wakepro. Putting the new prop on, it didn’t seat nearly as far up the shaft as the one I took off. I had to tighten almost as hard as I could (hand wrench) just to get the nut on far enough to get a cotter pin back through. With the original prop, the nit was seated about 2-3 threads above the pin.

Is this normal? Unfortunately, OJ props is closed for the weekend. I’m a little leery to put the boat back in the water with this concern... any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I asked a similar question a while ago and guys told me that the prop is self tightening because of the direction of the threads and the rotation of the prop.

I'd use it and then swim under there a couple of times and verify it's good....if you can.

Thanks for the reply. We are gonna run it today and put it back on the trailer tomorrow. I’ll inspect it when we pull it out.

thats right. It’s reverse when it all comes apart!

To be sure, I would look on backside of the shaft to be sure the prop is seated properly all the way up, its possible for the keyway to slip out and bind the prop from sliding all the way up, which would keep you from being able to tighten it to where it should sit. You don't want to run it like that cause there will be slop and it will vibrate. You should notice an issue pretty quick if you did run it and it wasnt on there right. Worth double checking it. Could be other factors, this is just what came to mind since the 2 props should sit at similar spot on shaft.
