    2008 - SANTE 220 - What oil do i use ?

    HI All,

I have been reading up a lot and I am trying to find the right oil to use for my boat. I have a zr-6 engine and the manual states this

    Above 50 Degrees - Use SAE 15W-40 "GF-4/SM"
    Below 50 Degrees - Use SAE 5W-30
    "GF-4/SM"

I live up in Canada and in the summers and it is usually 15 - 30 degrees celcius, which means I would be running above 50 dgrees farenheight. My question here is that it is hard to find that oil and how can I tell if it is GF-4/SM this is not something that you see written on the oil containers.

Are there any types of oils that can be used. Example 10W-30 5W-40 ? I am curious to see the recommendations from you guys as well as "What NOT to use"

    Thanks,
    210 SANTE

Shell Rottella 15w-40 Diesel Oil, in the states just about everywhere has it, Menards, Wall Mart, NAPA, Autozone, etc. etc.
What not to use, anything else, lol

That oil in your picture is the correct stuff. Check manual for capacity, I have the ZR409...you start with 4 quarts (with new filter) and then adjust from there after running for 5mins. ZR-6 may be different, not sure.

            Hi guys,

SO I bought the shell rotella oil for my 2008 ZR-6 390hp. The only thing I am worried about is nowhere on the oil container is it listed SM or even SN, which is the newer version, and that was a requirement from the manual (You can see the pics). Can you please let me know if it is still okay to use. Maybe this is backwards compatable.

SM and SN ratings are for gasoline engines. You won't see these ratings on oils branded for diesel engines which is 99.9% of the use for the SAE15W-40 that most everyone here is using in their boats. You can find enough research and reading material on engine oil for a novel, but the biggest key is oil/filter changes every 50 hours and with winterization. More resources if you're interested:

hi rlwagens, sorry I didn't 100% understand here what you are trying to say. Are you saying it is okay to use this oil in my boat despite that fact that it is only c class and there is no mention whatsoever of s class ?

Yes, you're fine. My dealer buys Rotella 15W-40 by the 55 gallon drum. They put it in every boat.

Yeah, sorry. I meant to clarify that the ratings don’t really mean much due to the way the oil is branded once it gets to that high a viscosity. Pretty much everyone is using that same oil in their boats. You’ll be fine.

Why the recommendation for Rottella vs other oils?
With my GT40 I know high Zinc content was required for the flat tappet.

With the GM engines, I thought standard oil was fine as they have rollers.

I use Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 in my 2001 Super Air Nautique 210. It’s got the GT40 engine with flat tappets. I change the oil every 50 hours and the engine is doing great. I just changed the transmission oil and used Carquest Multi Vehicle ATF which is rated up to Dexron III. I also just changed the V-Drive oil and used Carquest SAE 30. Anybody have any thoughts on those Carquest oils?

Any SAE 30 oil will do for the V-drive. I usually get mine from HD because many lawnmowers call for just SAE 30 weight. The V-drive is simply using this as gear oil. It’s funny draining it in that tiny space?.
