Hi, i have a LOT of water entering my bilge (2000 SAN) and have got it on the trailer and filled the bilge with water to find the leak. Well, the water is practically running from the thru-hull fitting where the shaft goes through. ( has 4 screws through it). The screws feel tight so the question is....what do I do next? Inside I have a rubber collar, do I have to remove this? Any help please....

RE: Water Leak
That is weird, on every boat I have seen, the shaft log is glassed to the hull without any screws. If yours is screwed in, then remove the log and re-seal it to the hull using Life Boat Caulk or equivalent. It could also be the rubber hose (collar) that has cracked and letting the water in/out.

RE: Water Leak
Well, i've just taken the packing nut off and the rope looks fairly shot, so i'm guessing replace this yeah? Other point is, I have the goretex VIRTUALLY DRIPLESS stuff. Is it OK tom use this rather than the ROPE style? If so, what is the best way to do it, overlapping several pieces or something else??

RE: Water Leak
Wrap the packing 4 times around the shaft then cut with a razor blade or similar knife longitudinally down the shaft, this produces 4 rings of the correct size. Now place each ring in the stuffing box with the joining ends spaced equally apart, (as you do with piston rings), mine usually takes 3 rings. Tighten up the fitting, adjust for 4 or 5 drips per minute otherwise it's too tight. forget what he actual spec is, anyone care to comment.

RE: Water Leak
Thanks dwsa. Are we talking about putting the packing around the shaft between the lock-nut and the tightening nut? ( the two that the safety wire connects through), or am I supposed to remove the rubber seal at the bottom of the shaft, ( where it goes thru the hull)? The only reason i ask is that there was only 1 wrap of rope around the shaft when I took them appart. Sorry for all the questions but I cannot seem to get the manual downloaded.
Also, when timing the drips, should the boat be run first? And will the drip rate not increase when in gear?

RE: Water Leak
The packing goes between the nut and brass piece the nut scews onto. you want 3 pieces of 3/8th packing. i use teflon coated flax just because I haven't found the Goretex yet. rotate the pieces so the joints are 180 degrees apart tighten the nut til you get the 4-5 drips per minute. Run the boat a couple of days, Then tighten the nut again and wire it.Nautiqueless in San Diego
