Short comings of 2001 SAN... Asking for a friend

Buddy just called saying he's going to go look at an 01 SAN for sale, knowing I'm on my 3rd Nautique he calls asking what I should look for. Having never owned an 01 (97, 05 were closest) did a quick search found guages were an issue but seem to have a fix. Anything else I/he should know about or check? Not sure what engine... Was gt40 available? If so did they get the ECU's figured out? Other thoughts/ideas? TIA

I have an 01 Super Air, couldnÂ’t be happier! Yes the gauges are notorious for going out. I bought mine after the factory Nautique gauge with speed, tach, and hours had already failed. Previous owner told me it had failed while they owned it and it was the summer before I bought it. They said it had roughly 400 hours on it and they put about another 20 on it. I trusted that was at least close, given the overall condition of the boat. I decided not to replace as I donÂ’t believe it will kill resale, given it will not be accurate anyways.
The factory perfect pass had been updated to Stargazer, which is a must for any hard core riders!
Mine does have the GT-40 motor and I have yet to see any issues with that. I have a friend that always kept spare relays for his, which he passed on to me after he sold his boat. I have yet to need any of them.
Have him lift the center rear cushion and check the v-drive. I am not sure whether I purchased mine with a cracked cover, or it happened shortly after I bought it. Bottom line is due to poor winterization at some point the v-drive cooling chamber froze and cracked the cover and must have put a pin hole leak in the copper lines the oil runs through. Very well could have been me as I extended the season on the lift a bit longer than normal as I was in the middle of a trailer resto. Bottom line is I had to pull the v-drive and ship it off to Walter in New Jersey for a rebuild. Cost me about $900 all said and done. And I am not the only one on this forum who has to do that same thing.
If he plans on riding heavy he may want to go ahead and plan on upgrading prop if it hasnÂ’t already been done. I chose the 16x16 prop for mine and donÂ’t regret that decision one bit. Well worth the $400 or so.
ThatÂ’s about all I can think of, good luck on the purchase!

You can’t beat the timeless fashion of the OG SAN
