1994 Sport Nautique ignition voltage issues

Hey all, I am in the process of replacing the main hot and ground wires to the dash as suggested by another post. While poking around under the dash with a voltmeter I was getting about 12.35 volts at the constant side of the ignition. With the ignition breaker and key on I am only getting around 8 volts at the switched positive side of the ignition. Could the ignition key body (or whatever its called) be bad and need replaced? I am in turn getting a reading of 8 volts at my volt meter and suspect the rest of my gauges are finicky because of the low voltage. Also, these readings are all with the engine not running. Thanks in advance!

The ignition switch can absolutely go bad, and sounds like your problem.
