Should Engine Light be ON before starting engine?

When turning on the ignition on my new (used) '95 SN, I notice the engine light (pictured) turns on. Is this normal?

I haven't yet had the boat in the water, but based on running it off the hose, I suspect the engine is in SLOW mode. When revving past 2500, the engine is brought back down below 2500 RPM where it idles wonderfully. I also here a rather annoying high-pitched sound coming from the engine -- like an alarm -- not a belt. My current suspicion is that there's an issue with the oil and/or water temp sensor. Engine temp and oil pressure sending units are showing good values on the gauges, and I have no reason to suspect a lack of oil pressure or high engine temp.

I'm just not sure if that "engine light" always lights as part of a diagnostic when starting the boat or not. If not, then I'm I think there's a good chance one of these sensors is acting up.

    Thanks,
    Rick

Yes, that light should be on when at idle. I want to say 1200 rpm is when it cuts off, but would need to look in the book to be sure. Not sure on your alarm noise.

I don't believe that's correct. I think that's just for the v drive not the engine light.

There is a way to test which sender is wrong by just disconnecting it and the light should go away.

You know, I think you’re right about the V drive.

Nothing to worry about here. That light should be on until the engine starts. Once the engine is running, it should be OFF. If it stays on, it's trying to tell you something.

Disconnect both oil and temp switches, not senders, one by one and see if that cures it. Seen faulty switches for both in the past.

Done and I think it's a bad low-pressure fuel pump. It's emitting a whining sound both when I turn on the ignition and when the engine is running.
