Fuel Pump Whining

kylem03 Thanks Kyle -- picked one up at napa this morning. REALLY hoping this does the trick. Learned a couple of days ago that the FCC retrofit kit is on backorder, so if it's my HPP, I'm out of luck for a while.

If your HPP is bad, don’t be so fast to think you have to order the FCC retro kit. There is a carter pump that will work for <$100 but will require some re routing or capping of the line coming off the “y” on the bottom of the pump. I believe it is an overflow if memory serves me right. I was researching it heavy when I thought mine was dead, and of course the direct replacements are NLA. I pieced together how to fix the issue off of the Malibu forums because indmar used the same pump as our boats have and did so til fairly recently. They now have a retro kit with a different hp pump.

Well, not the fuel filter. Looking closely at this cater pump. If that will do the job, I won’t feel bad at all if I have to replace the lpp. I did determine that it’s def the hpp making noise. So either it’s bad or it’s not getting enough fuel from the lpp and the lpp is bad. One of these two is the culprit.

Did you rule out a supply issue? I.e. blockage from tank to lpp.

I think so... I replaced the inline fuel filter.

This brings up a good question: If I remove the fuel line from the fuel filter, should gas start flowing from the line? Considering there's almost a full tank of gas, I was preparing for a deluge but got nothing.

No the Coast Guard requires an anti siphon valve to be installed so that if the feed hose springs a leak all the fuel won't siphon down into the bilge. It is the fitting that the fuel hose connects to on the tank. Looks like a hose barb but there is a ball and spring assembly that can get clogged. Take it off and see if it needs cleaning.

Turned out to be the HPP. The LPP wasn't looking too hot either, so I went with the FCC retro kit.
