Oil Capacity vs Dipstick reading 6.0

    Hello,
New to me 2008 -- 230 with ZR6. Changed the oil and filter for the first time per the PCM manual that states 5 quarts with filter. Have put in 5.5 quarts and still below the add mark after running and letting sit for an hour. The boat is on the trailer but I do have it level. Anyone else experience this? I'm going to keep adding but at the level I'm at it looks like to me at 6 quarts I still won't be on the full line. I guess maybe I should check in the water before adding more. Any thoughts anyone --- Thank you!

That’s interesting. Maybe I don’t always get every bit of oil out, but my ZR450 and my ZR4 hit the full mark on the dipstick with a little less than 5 quarts. I’m sure others will chime in.

I want to say my 2006 ZR6(375HP) took exactly 6 quarts. My 2013 ZR6(409HP) only takes about 4 1/2 quarts.

Maybe peek at your dipstick tube and make sure it's fully seated. If it's not all the way down, you'd be getting artificially low readings. Also, weren't there some engines around that time-frame that had the wrong dipstick length? You may want to look into that.

I would suggest checking the level while the boat is in the water. Even sitting level on the trailer my EX330 shows at least 1/2 quart difference compared to in the water. If it still shows low in the water then add oil accordingly.

My 2007 takes exactly 6 quarts as well. The first time I changed the oil and filter, I put in 5 quarts on the trailer, took the boat to the lake and added another quart for a total of 6.

Thank you all for your responses and info. The dipstick was fully seated. I ran the boat for at least 15 minutes, temps were up then immediately drained the oil through the drain tube. I did not suck it out which I wonder if I would have gotten more out - not sure but I did let it drain for over an hour. Will be going to the lake this weekend so will take some oil with me and check while in the water. The comment about the wrong dipstick is a great question. I had a Cobalt years ago that had that exact problem and it never read correctly until I replaced it with the correct one. Thank again!

Check it after it sits overnight. Better to be slightly below the full mark than to overtop it. You can always add more later.

Ran the boat today with 6 quarts, still showing at or slightly above the add line. Didn't add anymore, would find it hard to believe it held more than 6 quarts. Will contact Nautique and see if they think my dipstick might be wrong unless anyone else has any other ideas.

I have a 2008 zr-6 390 hp and I too changed my oil for the first time this year. I put a full 5 qt of shell rotella. I was also just at the add mark, but on the trailer. I then ran my boat on the lake for the first time about 20 min. Let everything settle for about 30 min. Lowered the lift into the water until the boat was floating and then it read almost full. Make sure the boat is floating and make sure you allow enough time to drain down.

Thank you, I will check several times again this weekend. I did check it last weekend after sitting in the water for 20 minutes or so. I'll let it sit little longer.
