Needless to say the problem has been solved.
This is how the y-pipe was set up by me, this spring, incorrectly (with the water pump obviously missing):
Duh, the water flows THE OTHER WAY and this is how it looks now - it's hard to see because there's just not much room unless I remove the ballast tank, which isn't necessary except for optimal picture taking.
And today when we took the boat out, the engine ran at around 130F, creeping up to around 150 at cruising speed, but really hanging around 130-140. I can't really explain why that is the case, but I'm not going to worry about it for now. If it was running hot, that would be a different story. A little cold? I can live with that. The bottom line is it ran perfectly with no leaks anywhere and the heat works great now. So... I'm calling it a win for now.
PS this is what my impeller looked like after 2 years of service:
In my opinion, perfectly acceptable and that's just one of the reasons I'll continue to to every-other year impeller changes. You do what you want, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
